In 1644 Colonel Nicholas Devereux and his Regiment garrisoned Malmesbury for two years after it was seized for the last time by the Parliamentarians. The current Colonel NicholasDevereux’s Regiment of Foot from the English Civil War Society is celebrating its50th anniversary in 2024 and will be arriving in Malmesbury in force! They are alsobringing some Royalist opposition with them! What better way to mark a birthday?

A talk by Dr Chris Scott,former Director of Education for The Royal Armouries and an accomplished storyteller. Malmesbury Town Hall. Tickets £10 from Malmesbury Town Hall and at malmesbury.gov.uk/devereux

Saturday 4th May 10:00am – 4:30pm

Cloister Gardens and Malmesbury Town Hall: Visit a Civil War military camp anddisplays in the Town Hall. See live demonstrations of food preparation and cooking, the officers tent, scribing, dyeing and making, sword skills, a beer shop and tavern, C17th music and dancing, period games and meet Chuck and his rider.

Plus: 12noon – 4:00pm Market Lane: See the original unique Birds Eye View Map of Malmesbury produced at the time the Devereux were in Malmesbury from 1644 to 1646 and importantWarden and Freemen of Malmesbury memorabilia.

Sunday 5th May 10:00am – 4:30pm

All of Saturday’s activities in the Cloister Gardens and Malmesbury Town Hall plus two showings of the live re-enactment of the last attack on Malmesbury in May 1644 … Abbey Row, Gloucester Street, Market Cross re-enactments: 1:30pm & 3:00pm Spectating places open from 20 mins before each event. Stewards instructions must be followed at all times.
