Basing House

14-15th September

The Marquess of Winchester’s Regiment has a spiritual home at the ruins of Basing House. Basing was the home of home of John Paulet, 5th Marquess of Winchester, who held the House for the King during the English Civil War. The Marquess’s loyalty to both his Roman Catholic religion and to his Anglican King was unbreakable. The House, which was compared to Hampton Court Palace in both size and magnificence, was destroyed by Cromwell at the end of the third siege it suffered during the Civil War.

The modern regiment has the great privilege to be allowed to occupy the ruins of the House over the weekend of 14-15th September. There will be a military encampment and demonstrations of drill, along with a skirmish display. There will also be displays of civilian life of the period.
